I keep thinking about @ryanbroderick writing, that the #fediverse needs "its Gmail" for everyone to just use it and not think about, what they're using.
I do like that idea, but I'm unsure, what such a thing/app/platform would need to be. What do you think?
Should it be like a Web-App where you could use any account on #Mastodon etc.? Will it be yet another platform, that is just way easier to use?
What I'm asking is, how will people acces the fediverse, that are still not on #Mastodon?
Some things, that come to mind for an app to "consume content in the #fediverse":
- make it very easy to manage lists
- make it very customizable in regards to what you see and how you see your timeline (long posts, videos, images etc.)
- an algorithm to find the most important things in your timeline
- make it work seamlessly between devices
- make it easy and intuitive to consume individual posts or content parts (articles)
- give the comment section a fine layout
@mho
Some thoughts about it:
- customizing is important, but I would say the majority of people is expecting a "working out-of-box" experience (that's what Apple benefits from)
- also, that's exactly why an algorithm is key! If you start with an empty timeline, whitout proposals, most of the people will leave again. That's the sad truth.
- a good cross-device experience is not that important imo, the success of WhatsApp is the best example for that. Nevertheless, would be nice. of course.

So, you start making plans for a Heise-don app or, even better, the Heise-verse?
