It makes NO sense to say that.Centralised services can be very secure, they just have different issues. Censorship could occur, for example, also downtimes.And that coming from people often claiming that verifying fingerprints is "unnecessary" because "XMPP is secure".What the hell?

I am not a security expert, but I am a mathematician and I am confortable with the Linux command line. This guide is for people who want to use PGP for secure messaging easily. You will need to be okay with typing commands into the Linux command line in order to do this, but I will tell you exactly what to enter.Part 1: XMPPMastodon is like email, but for social media. You sign up for an account with a server, and then you can talk with any other accounts that are signed up on other servers, as long as your servers are getting along. (No one wants emails from the sketchy spam server, and we want to be able to choose between Yahoo, Gmail, etc.) XMPP (a.k.a. Jabber) is the same thing for text messaging.Just like signing up for an email/Mastodon account, you need to sign up for an account. You can find a list of servers at <a href="https://list.jabber.at/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank">https://list.jabber.at/</a> and will probably at least need to provide an email addess when making an account.Once you have made an account, you need a client. You can then enter your account name and password to log into your XMPP account and start chatting! Hier mal Infos wie ich es hoffentlich bis Ende Grundschule durchziehe. 🙂 1) Wir versuchen, dass die <a href="https://devlug.de/social?t=kinder" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Kinder</a> allgemein mehr in der echten Welt unterwegs sind als in der digitalen <a href="https://devlug.de/social?t=welt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Welt</a>. Sie sollen nicht im Internet nachlesen was ein <a href="https://devlug.de/social?t=wald" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Wald</a> ist, sondern diesen selber erleben. Ist für Eltern nicht einfacher, aber für Kinder sicherlich gesünder. 2) Wenn die Kinder Fragen haben, die wir nicht beantworten können, kann man diese aufschreiben und am Abend nachlesen. Hin und wieder setzen wir uns an den Laptop und lesen es dann zusammen auf <a href="https://devlug.de/social?t=wikipedia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Wikipedia</a> nach. Ich selber nutze kein <a href="https://devlug.de/social?t=chatgpt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ChatGPT</a> sondern meist Wikipedia. Es muss nicht immer alles sofort sein und ich finde es einfacher sich die Zeit dafür zu nehmen. Denn meist bleibt es nicht bei der einen Frage 🙂 3) Schreiben von Nachrichten muss auch nicht sofort sein. D.h. hier kann man auch auf ein Smartphone verzichten. Ich schreib die Nachrichten zusammen mit den Kindern am PC. Wir verwenden <a href="https://devlug.de/social?t=xmpp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#XMPP</a> was die Kommunikation am PC auch sehr einfach macht. 4) Unsere Kindern dürfen auch Computerspiele spielen. Hier verwenden wir ausgewählte Spiele auf dem Familien Computer. Der Computer läuft mit dem Freien Betriebssystem <a href="https://devlug.de/social?t=debian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Debian</a> <a href="https://devlug.de/social?t=gnu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#GNU</a> <a href="https://devlug.de/social?t=linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Linux</a>. Installiert sind ein paar einfach Spiele, Lernprogramme. 5) Die Verwendung vom Internet ist nur unter Aufsicht. Kein Social Media, Kein Facebook, kein TikTok. Ich glaube da muss man nicht viel zu sagen. 6) Computerkurs gebe ich selber. Wie startet man ein Programm. Was ist eine Datei, was ist ein Verzeichnis, usw. Wie schreibt man eine E-Mail. Für all diese Dinge brauchen wir kein Smartphone! Wir lernen was ein Computer ist, was ein Betriebssystem ist. Polychrome :clockworkheart:In Monocles Chat is there a way to copy my <a class="hashtag" href="https://poly.cybre.city/tag/xmpp" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#XMPP</a> chat history to a new device? As in, for adding a secondary device that'll be using different OMEMO keys but will share existing chat history. Can't find a way to do this on Conversations IM either.
