Thursdays are great as this when we hold our regular Vibrationists rehearsal—the new live music and multimedia project with @Suzy Starlite, @Dave Boyd and myself. Dave normally arrives at the Supertone Sonic Laboratory around noon and after setting up, we normally kick off playing the trickiest stuff from our ever-expanding set list. It’s very interesting as we are reimagining our existing material for the three-piece format incorporating new instrumentation. Yesterday saw the first appearance of Dave’s BOSS monster looper pedal which really made a great contribution to the soundscape. Starlite is also really pushing the boundaries of her pedalboard and is making some very cool noises. We always have a relaxed lunch which is a great time to discuss in words what we don’t say in the music. Yesterday was Starlite's special salad with Halloumi and my version of tabbouli. As ever I am wrestling with the number of instruments I need to deliver a smooth live performance. Currently, the Springer Firehawk, Fender Nocaster and Gretsch G6120-1960 Nashville electrics will be making an appearance plus the Collings D2H and Fylde custom 6 and 12 strings acoustics. That’s six fucking guitars and I may need more. The big issue I have is during the set I use five-six tunings, ranging from a very interesting Csus right through to standard. Guitars don’t like to be quickly pulled all the way up from C and back down again—especially in this climate which plays havoc with acoustic instruments—so it’s best if you have dedicated guitars for dedicated tunings. It wouldn’t be so bad if we could program the songs that would best suit the tunings, but live sets don’t work that way as the song order is paramount to a successful gig. All I can say, it’s a good job we have the mighty Van Of Rock. ////// We have been gradually adding stuff to our website and now have a good summary of what we are all about - take a look. ////// Warning | guitar porn. As part of the research, @Suzy Starlite and I have been looking at brands and logos we admire. One of the most iconic of guitar and bass amplifiers has recently been revived and it reminded us of the superb logo which was plagiarised, with aplomb, by the drone metal legends sunn o))). We even bought the t-shirt so to speak. This is the original—beautiful eh?

Anybody have recommendations for interesting #musician-oriented apps on #android? Was away from my various tinkering tools tonight and so far played with Semitone (#fdroid), Koala Sampler (paid) and I've got #lsdj running in lemuroid.

Just playing around and making fun noises, prefer #opensource or free tools, but if it's something interesting I'm not above paid apps (as long as there's no subscription).

I have a stylus for my phone too, so can press many tiny buttons on the screen.

Noel Scott Engel—aka Walker—was an enigma who went on to create increasingly experimental and challenging music. He was an inspiration to countless artists including David Bowie, Yorke, Radiohead, Bauhaus, Anohni and us. I strongly suggest you listen to this along with his other solo work and Nite Flights by the Walker Brothers. The music could change your world.

SubstackSimon Campbell on SubstackWhen starting a new musical project experience tell us that getting the business side of it clear from the outset is crucial and saves a lot of heartache later on. On Tuesday, @Suzy Starlite , @Dave Boyd and I arranged to meet down at Ginjinha do Sanguinhal, a cool coffee shop located close to Dave’s house. This tied in nicely as we were off to visit a luthier in Óbidos that very morning as I needed the nut of our Fylde custom 12 string modifying slightly to accept a thicker low G string. Roger Bucknall MBE—the owner of Fylde—usually fits a plain G string which, although it sounds great, is tricky to keep in tune. It’s a simple job, which along with other minor repairs I would normally undertake myself, but I don’t own a suitable file and they are very expensive, especially considering it’s a one off mod. ////// We had never been inside the walls of the historic City before and were blown away with the architecture and vibe. It was raining but still very busy with visitors and the selection of shops, albeit tourist centric, was quite amazing. ////// Luís Eusébio’s studio is located in the North of the City and we arrived to a very warm welcome. He makes a variety of high end traditional instruments and also undertakes repairs on anything with strings! Whilst chewing the fat we found out Luís was a good friend of Andy Manson and Adriano Sérgio, who are both superb luthiers and good pals of ours. Small world—there is certainly something happening up here. ////// We left with the mod completed and a spring in our step. Before travelling on, we checked the route to Ginjinha do Sanguinhal only to find it was closed on Tuesday so we rearranged to meet at Prohibition—where we are playing on June 1st—which is located just outside the walls of the City. We had a great meeting and nailed down all the financial and practical issues of working together. It was also a good time to flesh out the content of the Vibrationists website. A great afternoon. ////// We went home and I cooked dinner using recipes from the excellent Lebanese Kitchen cookbook featuring a pumpkin gifted to us by Dave and his wonderful partner Freya. Whilst the vegetable was roasting we whipped up the final four acoustic panels in the mixing end of the Lab. ////// Yesterday we had a great six hour rehearsal and are really making progress with our new set. SubstackSimon Campbell on SubstackApart from remantling—surely this is the opposite of dismantling and if not, it should be—The Supertone Sonic Laboratory, our music focus is on our new side project Vibrationists with @Suzy Starlite , @Dave Boyd and myself. ___________________________ Sound vibrations are the movement of air molecules caused by vibrating objects. These vibrations travel through solids, liquids, and gases as sound waves. When the sound waves reach our ears, our brains interpret them as sound. ___________________________ One of the first steps when creating a new project is describing what we are doing for our supporters and media. We have always struggled defining our music as it varied and covers many genres. Suzy and I are songwriters and if the tracks need a solo piano or acoustic guitar, that’s what they get. Frantic arpeggiated sequences—no problem. Things that go ‘boing’ or ‘clang’—a natural addition to the soundscape. At first, Vibrationists is a live performance multimedia project where we are reimagining a selection of songs from our five studio albums in the format of a three piece with Bodhrán, percussion, drum machine, Wurlitzer electric piano, synthesizers, guitars, bass and harmony vocals. Fortunately, I only have to play guitar and occasionally synthesizer plus sing leaving all the heavy musical lifting to my very talented band mates who are able to rub their tummies and pat their heads in multiple directions and time signatures whilst whistling a tune by Soft Machine at their most abstract. We are thinking of how describe what we are up to. ////// One gig is equivalent to 20 rehearsals and on June 1st we have our debut at Prohibition, in Óbidos—the first step in readying ourselves to tour. I just picked this 4 string Fender Squire Affinity bass up for less than the cost of a single meal at your favorite fast food place.
I'll fix the dings, scratches & paint it and change & set up the electronics (all of which I already have on hand) & then the neck etc, then a $15 set of new strings, and sell it for $150 or more. I just love #guitars
