#Oceans last year reached their highest levels in three decades — with the global #SeaLevel rate rising higher than expected, according to a NASA-led analysis published Thursday. The unexpected rise in global levels is alarming, particularly for regional impacts around coastal cities, many of which are already experiencing more damaging #flooding.

NEW: South Sudan, fresh off a civil war and economic crisis, is struggling to respond to record levels of flooding. It is even less prepared to support those with disabilities.

Yesterday I was going through old photos from the village in Eastern Bohemia where my grandmother was born, and in the context of the recent record floods, I was intrigued by the ones where our ancestors in the 1950s were "solving" the water problem: they drained the meadows, straightened the riverbeds and filled in the natural meanders.

Today, we cannot be surprised that the landscape has little capacity to hold water which then immediately rushes down into the valley.

It is not going to be too bad here, but I will be live posting a thread here on Hurricane Helene. I will use the hashtag sparingly in this thread so that people who need to use it for help don't get diluted with my posts. Feel free to actively boost.

I am in Saint Petersburg, FL. We will be about 125 miles (200 km) from the eye of the storm at its closest approach. We will likely get a lot of rain and tropical storm force winds. There will flooding in some nearby low-lying neighborhoods but we are about 50 ft (15 m) above sea level. We probably will lose electricity - we always seem to.
