Rick Thoman<p>It’s been snowing for 36 consecutive hours and all we got to show for it in low elevation Fairbanks is a slushy mess. <a href="https://alaskan.social/tags/akwx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>akwx</span></a> <a href="https://alaskan.social/tags/weather" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>weather</span></a> <a href="https://alaskan.social/tags/snow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>snow</span></a> <a href="https://alaskan.social/tags/Spring2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Spring2025</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://alaskan.social/@anisian" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>anisian</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://sfba.social/@MicheleV_AK" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>MicheleV_AK</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@debmcqueen" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>debmcqueen</span></a></span></p>
Rick Thoman<p>I've got a short post up in the Alaska and Arctic Climate newsletter about the state of the late February snowpack (or lack thereof) in Alaska and a few of the (potential) impacts. <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fediscience.org/@Climatologist49" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>Climatologist49</span></a></span> </p><p><a href="https://alaskaclimate.substack.com/p/snowpack-update-february-2025" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">alaskaclimate.substack.com/p/s</span><span class="invisible">nowpack-update-february-2025</span></a></p><p><a href="https://alaskan.social/tags/akwx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>akwx</span></a> <a href="https://alaskan.social/tags/Snow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Snow</span></a> <a href="https://alaskan.social/tags/Climate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Climate</span></a></p>
Rick Thoman<p>Incredibly high precipitation totals over most of mainland Alaska for January 2025. In ERA5 reanalysis, over 40 percent (!!) of Alaska had the highest January precipitation since 1950. Prior to that, only January 1937 is comparable. <a href="https://alaskan.social/tags/akwx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>akwx</span></a> <a href="https://alaskan.social/tags/Climate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Climate</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fediscience.org/@Climatologist49" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>Climatologist49</span></a></span></p>
SilverSalmonAK<p>6:00AM: 44F, fog/mist</p><p>I've attached a pic of the view out one of my living room windows. Rick Thoman<p>High temperatures in and around Alaska on Friday. Once again, at or near record warmth in southwest Alaska and above normal most of the rest the state except in Southeast. <a href="https://alaskan.social/tags/akwx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>akwx</span></a> <a href="https://alaskan.social/tags/weather" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>weather</span></a></p>
Rick Thoman<p>Updated 50-year change of annual temperature (ºF) for the Alaska climate divisions, now for 1975-2024. Largest changes are in the North Slope and West Coast divisions and driven by, you guessed it, sea ice loss. Rick Thoman<p>Say goodnight: Tuesday saw the last sunset of the year at Ulġuniq (Wainright, Inupiat country), at 70.64ºN the second-most northerly community in Alaska. This FAA webcam image is from almost exactly solar noon, with the sun at its highest point in the sky for the day. Next sunrise will be on January 20, 2024. NWS automated wx station has not reported online for a month. <a href="https://alaskan.social/tags/akwx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>akwx</span></a> <a href="https://alaskan.social/tags/Arctic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Arctic</span></a> <a href="https://alaskan.social/tags/Autumn2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Autumn2023</span></a> <br><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fediscience.org/@Climatologist49" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>Climatologist49</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/@cinderbdt" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>cinderbdt</span></a></span></p>

Rick Thoman<p>Annual update to the 50-year seasonal temperature changes in and around <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Alaska" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Alaska</span></a> (ºF), now for 1973-2022, all from ERA5 courtesy of ECMWF/Copernicus. The incredible warming in the autumn across northern Alaska is driven by the loss of sea ice. The comparatively modest warming in summer in part reflects the unimportance of snow and ice in that one season. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/akwx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>akwx</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Arctic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Arctic</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/climate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>climate</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/climatechange" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>climatechange</span></a></p>
