The pre-dawn sky occupies nearly all the image, gently graduating from a deep blue-black at zenith through gradually lighter and lighter shades until it switches to a pale peach-pink right along the horizon. Hanging in the light blue is a tiny present moon, while Venus is very high in the dark blue vault. On the horizon are some thin, linear clouds, still black, while under them is a suburban hillside running down to the river, sprinkled with pre-dawn lights.

A tiny crescent moon hangs high in the still dark-blue sky, which occupies half the image. The size of the moon emphasises the blue immensity of the sky's vault. As we descend, the blue gradually lightens almost to white, where it meets several banks of wind-teased cumulus, still with solid cores but with drawn out and wispy outlines. The clouds are all lit bright orange underneath by the coming sun, while their upper and near surfaces are still contrasting grey. Underneath again, a long, black silhouette of a gently rolling suburban ridgeline anchors the image to the ground.

The thinnest of crescent moons sits high in a deep blue dawn sky. Unlike some sunrises, there's no gentle gradation of colour in the sky, the blue fades only slightly towards the horizon before changing abruptly to an unvarying, light yellow glow, with hints of rays emerging. The bright dawn light silhouettes the skyline running along the bottom of the image, a suburban ridgeline of trees and houses. Just at the far right of the image, on the horizon is a small patchy band of cloud, adding a little texture to an otherwise sparse image, dark, light, dark, with moon.

Overhead the sky is almost uniformly white and clouded also, so that "land" and sky are almost indistinguishable. C'était l'heure où les humains s'endorment et où les chouettes s'éveillent. L'heure où les villes s'assoupissent dans leur édredon de lumière. L'heure des rêves et des cauchemars qui se glissent dans les lits – et des monstres qui se glissent dessous – ; l'heure où le marchand de sable parsème le ciel de constellations étincelantes, sièges de tant de desseins. L'heure où le soleil a plongé sa grosse tête flamboyante de l'autre côté du globe et où l'heure bleue s'est coulée en encre de Chine. L'heure des sauvages qui galopent sur l'échine du monde. Partout, des yeux luisaient, des museaux fouissaient, des chants mystérieux fusaient.

Ce soir là, une fée décoiffée avait regardé le gros œil de la lune s'embuer de nuées couleurs chamallow. Le jour s'était éteint, le rose s'était fané, et la nuit, immense, avait étreint bois et campagne. Et l'œil s'était éclairé. Une prunelle lumineuse, curieuse, qui couvait le paysage d'un regard nacré.
« … Pourrais-je un jour voler jusque là-haut ? Rejoindre ce ballon suspendu, en ce lieu si léger, loin de la gravité du monde... et pourtant si proche, juste là, posté à porté de songes ? »

Toute la nuit, la fée fila à travers l'insondable ; silhouette féminine, discrétion féline, froufrou flottant en ligne de fuite. Simple froissement, frêle fêlure dans l'espace sans fin. C'était presque le petit matin, lorsque je l'aperçus à travers la fenêtre. Un mirage. Songe suspendu, dansant, qui, vu d'ici, touchait au but.
