"#Harvard has suffered real legal setbacks in recent years, including a major [#SCOTUS] loss on affirmative action, and some stakeholders may be leery of another public fight…But a 400-year-old institution should be making decisions with a time horizon of centuries, not news cycles. Making a principled stand now — with the law squarely on its side — is the single best thing Harvard could do to earn its continued place as a symbol of genuine excellence, free inquiry, and commitment to the public good. Filing suit would also enhance Harvard’s legal position going forward, as any retaliation by the administration would be an even clearer violation of the First Amendment."

In a stmnt on Monday, the #Trump admin said it was examining ~$256M in contracts, as well as another $8.7B in what it described as “multiyear grant commitments.”

“While #Harvard’s recent actions to curb institutionalized *antisemitism*—though long overdue—are welcome, there is much more that the university must do to retain the privilege of receiving federal taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars,” Josh Gruenbaum, a snr ofcl at the #GSA, said.

…A GoFundMe page set up by Anderson for #KseniyaPetrova said that the researcher was hired to work for #Harvard Medical School & had entered the US on a #WorkVisa. Anderson did not specify which work #visa category Petrova was under.
…Reports of Petrova’s detention come just weeks after a French #scientist was denied entry in the US this month after US #immigration officers searched his phone & found messages critical of #Trump.

Russian #scientist from #Harvard Medical School detained by #ICE
Cora Anderson, a friend & colleague of #KseniyaPetrova, shared the news of Petrova’s detention, saying Petrova arrived at #Boston’s Logan airport on 16 Feb from a trip to France when she was stopped by US authorities who revoked her #visa & told her she was to be deported to #Russia. In response, Petrova said she feared political persecution & was then sent to a #detention facility.

#Sauer, 50, is a #Harvard Law grad & #RhodesScholar who served as a #law clerk to the late #SupremeCourt Justice Antonin Scalia. Before his began representing #Trump in late 2023, Sauer was the state #SolicitorGeneral of Missouri [so he knows better]. He supported efforts to overturn Trump’s election defeat in 2020 & was at the lead of much of the red-state litigation against the #Biden admin.

His earlier representation of Trump *concerned* some of his Democratic critics.

If you're new to these definitional difficulties, there are many prominent and non-equivalent definitions of antisemitism, and the debates about them can be bitter.

I'm a Harvard employee of Jewish descent who lost family in the Holocaust, and I'm not happy with the recent decision.

The IHRA definition (2016) is not careful to distinguish criticism of #Jews from criticism of #Israel. On the contrary, most of its 11 examples of antisemitism deliberately mix the two.
