The fact that some hosting services don't support #ActivityPub for federating a #WordPress (.org) blog is a bit of a disappointment for those of us who believe #federation is a solution to the problem of centralized networks. Web hosting services should be independent of the project they host. At least, that's what I thought it should be until now.

Spring has reached the open social web
With a wave of momentum and publicity hitting the open social web, now is the time for us to really put our eggs in one basket (pun intended) and get serious about working together to grow better social media.
See my thoughts on my latest blog post here: https://forbetter.ghost.io/spring-on-the-social-web/
Thanks to the brains at Ghost, you can now follow my blog directly from the Fediverse @index
Hearing Felix mention that Mastodon doesn't have an AI slop issue on the EFF chat, but only a few hours ago I had to suspend federation to an AI slop instance...
Mastodon without @iftas is already struggling!
Little known fact: @evan and I worked at a startup in 2020 that never launched. It wasn't a great experience for me, but I loved the team we had hired, including Evan. I didn't know much then about #activitypub or the social web.
I went back to @Flipboard in 2021 and in 2023 I started to learn about #federation because of @mike's vision. Fast forward to 2025, Flipboard + @surf are organizing #SXSW's first #FediverseHouse. Evan was one of the first people to sign on, which created a snowball from there, which helped the even be a success.
This week, we got to meet IRL for the first time! So when I think about "the purpose" of that hard 10 months at that startup, I now know what it was.
@newyorktimes's veteran tech reporter @Markoff interviewed some of #TeamFediverse including @Gargron, @reckless1280 and our CEO @mike for a feature on the rise of decentralized social media. “It goes back to the original principles where the internet started out as decentralized,” Eugen Rochko told Markoff. Here's the full story [may be paywalled].
We're so excited to develop these conversations further at SXSW this weekend — check out the itinerary and sign up to join us at #FediverseHouse at the second link.
I've switched to lurking here for a while due to the effects the current political situation in the US is having on me. I am making some big changes to how I do things, including how I livestream and host various products of my math research. I'll be posting about the steps I take as I take them.
I have switched from #Firefox to #Librewolf on my desktops. This was pretty easy since I have been storing my bookmarks as a plain text file on my desktop for a while now. Very portable. I just wish #VideoDownloadHelper worked on Librewolf.
I am looking into #XMPP now and trying to find a server to sign up for. Does anyone know any with open registration?
I have also recently gotten into #IRC again, and am excited to get more familiar with the #Pidgin client on desktop.

Edit: Hi @librewolf !
#codeberg is #GoodEnough to replace #Github and #Gitlab for 95% of your FOSS projects, IMHO. Or you can take it to the next level and run your own #Forgejo instance as a (rootless) container, completely self-contained. And (hopefully) soon we will see more #federation features in #Forgejo, leading to a decentralised network of forges that can talk to each other to form a sustainable and resilient global network. (FTR: I've been running my Forgejo instance since 1.5 years now, no problems) 1/6
Has anyone had any luck federating with accounts on loops.video? I can only see @dansup in search results. Might not be flipped on yet?
#fediverse #federation #mastodon #loops
@aral #Codeberg and #Forgejo are absolute jewels. If you care about #opensource, #federation, #selfhosting, or just want a low maintenance, high quality #git based experience, I highly recommend them.
If you're using Mastodon and rely on the Web client I highly recommend that you also install the "substitoot" plugin for your browser of choice.
It will automatically, in the background, fetch reply threads, boosts/favourites of toots to give you a more real-[time/view] of a thread even if your particular instance has not seen all the toots.
I have NOT checked the security of this plugin and do not vouch for it in that sense.
QUESTION FOR DISCUSSION: where FOO is a federated protocol, can one ever be truly “deplatformed” by BAR, where BAR is an instance of FOO?
1/ FOO=Mastodon/ActivityPub, BAR=infosec.exchange
2/ FOO=AT-Proto, BAR=Bluesky
3/ FOO=Email, BAR=Gmail
I suspect that losing your Gmail account would be considered deplatforming, so why not your Mastodon account?
I have, perhaps unsurprisingly, received some pushback from Mastodon users who are saying approximately that “if someone gets kicked off a server for something they said somewhere else, it’s entirely fine and they can just go and create a new server for themselves, it’s not like they have been deplatformed”
I think this is demonstrably nonsense, simply by analogy.
Hence the above; what do you think?
So what are you guys using for Facebook Alternatives (self-hosted, open-source, federated)?
It might be this. Can't find your mention in his recent replies but didn't look too hard due to time constraints here.

Looking for some help:
I just started my own instance (via GoToSocial) but every account I try to follow from my account on that instance gets stuck in a "pending" state.
I even tried following this account from there, and I don't receive any sort of notice here that I have pending follow request.
I'm guessing it's some sort of #federation issue?
Any ideas?
The social media platforms we once relied on for authentic connection are disintegrating. Here's how you can make a difference.

Today the baby decided to photobomb my dissertation project presentation!
I am glad he was there to show support but he couldn’t help but spread some chaos. It went well I’m sure because of him.
Is there a federated letter box?
People should not call @mastodon
#decentralized. It simply isn't.
While it may be #decentralized in structure, it is centralized in #federation—like a group of states believing themselves autonomous, only to be crushed by the federal power that grew from within.
Today, I deactivated my birdsite account after letting it sit dormant for a year. It will be deleted in 30 days. I blogged about it because I was angry.
