The climate crisis is on track to destroy capitalism, a top insurer has warned, with the vast cost of extreme weather impacts leaving the financial sector unable to operate.

The world is fast approaching temperature levels where insurers will no longer be able to offer cover for many climate risks, said Günther Thallinger, on the board of Allianz SE, one of the world’s biggest insurance companies. He said that without insurance, which is already being pulled in some places, many other financial services become unviable, from mortgages to investments.

Mastodon! I'm delivering a talk to a couple of grade 9 classes in a month on the use of space (mainly satellites, but probes to other planets, comets, etc., will be included).

How does your work benefit from satellites?

I'm thinking of a direct use of the data, as opposed to stuff like “internet access” or “my bank relies on satellites to transfer my grant money from one account to another” 😄

Anecdotes, rants, personal stories are all fair game 😊
(To the inevitable suggestion that I just Google this, yes, I can, and have, but I want the human element - I want to be able to say "someone I ‘know’ uses satellites for their job, and this is what they like about the tech”)

Hashtag suggestions are welcome.
(Also - question: Does Mastodon discriminate hashtags with different capitalization? Are #Astronomy and #astronomy functionally different? We *really* need some kind of ISO standard 😉)

"Climate skeptics" are a thing of the past?

No. That's why we're here.

Bogus #ClimateSkepticism comes in various flavors. Many so-called skeptics are indeed cranks but others come in the passive form, their basis of doubt or disbelief mired in innocent ignorance.

Innocent ignorance can be fostered, cultivated-- and that's exactly what's happened over the course of decades in connection with #ScientificConsensus on #ClimateChange.

There was a time not very long ago when talking about the possibility that global warming might reach 3°C above the baseline was considered alarmist. You couldn’t say that without being labeled as a Doomer.

But today it’s not just “alarmists” like me who are talking about 3° of warming. Now it’s the allegedly respectable adults in the room, like Morgan Stanley…

And like Barack Obama…

Except, stunningly, when those “elites” discuss such realities, it’s NOT to raise the alarm. It’s NOT to call for system change — which we so obviously need.

Rather, it’s to point out all the wonderful new possibilities for profit-taking. And it’s to calm everyone down. No need to worry, they tell us. Everything is under control. Capitalism has the solutions. We can live happily and even thrive in a 3°C world. 🙄

#Trump has White House studying cost of #Greenland takeover

The WH is preparing an estimate of what it would cost the federal govt to control Greenland as a territory, acc/to 3 people with knowledge of the matter, the most concrete effort yet to turn Trump’s [#delusional, unsolicited & unwelcome] desire to acquire the Danish island into actionable #policy.

BC: a few new #wind projects in December.

What social attitudes must we create to stop the #pipelines, #fracking, #LNG, etc.?

We have the awareness, through society, but the desire isn't there. It's opposed by status quo convenience & #BigCarbon & weak politicians.

We also have the knowledge & ability to address #climatechange in BC, but without leadership, and STARTing, we can't reinforce positive change!

People in the know know what's coming.

🔴 Climate scientists know.

🔴 Top Wall Street financiers know.

🔴 Our "leaders" in business and government know.

Global warming *will* exceed 1.5°C above the pre-industrial average. Effectively it already has.

Any hope of staying below 2°C also appears to be lost. We are now heading toward a 3° world, if not higher.

Of course we should continue working hard to limit the catastrophic damage as much as possible. But you’re a fool if you’re not beginning at this point to prepare for the worst — because that's what's coming.
