One of the brightest and fastest aurora displays I’ve ever seen. The sky lit up over Fairbanks in February 2015 — an intense pink band crawled across the sky, leaving green in its wake. The whole show lasted only a few minutes.

I’ve spent hundreds of nights watching the aurora in Alaska, but this night at Angel Rocks is still burned into my memory. I hiked up at sunset, found a spot on a rocky outcrop, and waited — and when the lights came, they came fast. One of the brightest, most intense aurora I’ve ever seen, racing across the sky and lighting up the whole valley below.

A brilliant aurora display over the ridge near Angel Rocks, just outside Fairbanks, Alaska. This was taken in late April, with the last light of twilight still glowing on the horizon around 1 a.m.
