If it wasn't Mastodon it would be Misskey. Remember that Mastodon is just an interface: it's the people that make the Fediverse what it is.

Like I said, pretty sure it would have been Misskey, or maybe Friendica.

Remember that the Fediverse has existed for about a decade now. Mastodon was the one that got really big in the past couple years because it was the one that was best positioned when the Twitter fiasco began, and by best positioned I mean something about it had whatever it was that made the mainstream media start talking about it constantly as a potential alternative.
