So, @verge and @404mediaco want to federate their site. The articles would then be accessible directly in the , e.g. in a -Feed.

But why? I'd really like to collect arguments for this. What would the advantages for, say @heiseonline be? Please share and comment!

The advantage of federation is the possibility to be relevant in timely social discussions.

@mho @verge @404mediaco @heiseonline the why is simple

Your content should maximize accessibility so that your audience can find it easily without an algorithm (search or social) interfering

Right at the top of this article it sites 3 federated services - of which only 1 is actually federated.

@mho Some reasons to try:

1. Big social media platforms are lessening distribution. It’s like water. If your well dries up, you’ll build another, even if it’s not as good as the first. You need all the water you can find to get close to whole.

2. Social is how news is shared online. People are more likely to see news in a feed than type a URL every morning: push vs. pull.

3. Pubs don’t have to federate full articles. They can earn visits from excerpts, and they get social on their own sites.

Not having to pay social media platforms huge sums of money in "boosts" as an attempt to actually reach all their followers.

It's literally the only way I would ever see it. I use Mastodon to get my Tech news. I don't surf websites, or Google for it, I follow federated Tech news sites on Mastodon. Each day I spend and hour or two catching up (depending on how much stuff I reply to), and then get on with it. It's one of the things I love about using a federated site! Occasionally people will post an external link, but mostly it's follows/boosts.

@mho @verge @404mediaco @heiseonline
I should add for other news too! But I put those in a "News" list and only refer to that as needed (when I have time). Tech news is first, and sometimes I look at other news, but again it's always in Mastodon.

It’s cleaner, tidier, clearer when the publishers themselves are publishing to the Fediverse, rather than a third party scraping your feed or your headlines or cross posting from another source.

Less dependencies in the way.
